Deontay Wilder is the demon, toting the wrath of God on his shoulders. He has transcended all other Heavyweights. He has emerged from the depths of hell, despite his warm heart, to send Heavyweights to damnation. Ortiz, Breazeale, Szpilka, and others were all sent straight to hell by ‘Thor’s Hammer’ as Teddy Atlas calls it. Only one man walked through that fire to earn what should have been a victory just over a year ago. It still cost him a pound of flesh, but Saturday Tyson Fury will once again walk through the black flames to stop Deontay Wilder from haunting the Heavyweight division for years to come.

Unlike most of Wilder’s opponents, there was no submission in Tyson Fury’s eyes. His soul would not part from his flesh. He is the ‘Gypsy King’ after all. Perhaps he is protected by magic, perhaps not. All we know now is that Deontay Wilder’s overall boxing technique is nothing to write home about. Wilder uses his jab well for sure. His head movement is underrated, but that is pretty much it.
Other than one punch KOs, Fury does literally everything better than Wilder. Fury’s combos are more fluid, his jab is sharper, he is faster and probably more conditioned.

The Romany people have struggled for generations. They are born to fight, they love to fight and the pride of the Gypsies is ready to go. His body looks soft. He does not look like an athlete but he worked his way to becoming the best in the world. He is not a big puncher at all, but his skills have carried him far.
Wilder did well in the Olympics. He has put together a great career. But honestly, watching him throw twelve punches to beat Luis Ortiz was like watching a trust fund kid win the lottery. He did punch his ticket fair and square, but something just does not seem right about it. Casual fight fans probably loved it. It was certainly exciting, but the longer Wilder goes undefeated the more it seems like Heavyweight boxing is regressing toward brawling and away from technique.
A Gypsy loves movement, he lives by it, and Tyson Fury embodies that lifestyle in the ring. If either puts the other to sleep they will never be the same after. We do not know if Wilder has the spirit to rally and win a fight after being put down. We do know that Fury can do it, and that makes this all so very exciting. Fury was out cold in the first bout. There is no way around it. He was down for the count.

As his career progresses Wilder buys more and more into his own hype. He stated on the Breakfast Club radio show, “I want a body on my record”, meaning he wants to kill someone in competition. He waited for his opportunity in the Ortiz rematch and basically gave away every round on purpose. In the first bout with Fury he dropped Fury the first time by hitting him on the temple. Naturally Fury wobbled and fell to a knee after losing his balance. Then Wilder walked off like he really did something. Anybody gets wobbled from a temple shot. A guy already leaning over is going to fall down.
No matter what happens in the future, if Wilder does end killing somebody in the ring it will have been the will of God, because it is certainly not his skillset.
Whatever happens, Saturday cannot come fast enough. Everyone will see what Fury can do with a real experienced trainer after not having to lose so much weight. If we see the same Wilder we saw last time, he will likely lose handily. At least he will deserve to lose, because you never know with the judging. Do not blink though, just remember that!■
